KATHMANDU: India has approved the export of up to 654 MW of electricity to Nepal for 18 hours a day until December 31, citing damage to Nepal’s hydropower infrastructure caused by recent floods.
According to India’s Ministry of Power, the approval is effective from September 13, 2026, and allows up to 600 MW of electricity to be exported through the Muzaffarpur-Dhalkebar 400 kV double-circuit transmission line and up to 54 MW through the Tanakpur-Mahendranagar 132 kV single-circuit line.
The electricity will be supplied from midnight to 6 p.m. each day. The quantum of power to be exported from January 2027 onward will be reviewed in December, the ministry said.
The decision comes after recent floods caused significant damage to hydropower infrastructure on the Bhotekoshi-Trishuli River corridor in Nepal. The devastating floods of August 26 damaged 11 hydropower projects with a combined capacity of more than 400 MW. The floods caused an estimated damage of Rs 134.69 billion in the energy sector, according to the Rapid Damage and Needs Assessment report released by the government.
“The approval will help Nepal meet its power requirements during this difficult period and further strengthen the close and longstanding energy cooperation between India and Nepal,” the ministry added in the statement.
