‘Commitment to democracy, constitution must for President’

POKHARA: CPN (Maoist Center) General Secretary Dev Gurung has said that there should be a common candidate for the post of President.

Stating that political parties have repeatedly been betrayed by selecting political party leaders as president, Gurung said an individual with a clean image and a commitment to protecting democracy and the constitution would be appropriate for the post.

“Both CPN-UML and Nepali Congress are preparing to field their candidates for the post. But we have been saying that the candidate should be apolitical but should understand the norms and spirit of the constitution and democracy,” Gurung said. “Any political party can propose the candidate. We don’t need someone who misuses the constitution as President. We have been betrayed by the President in the past.”

Gurung also said that parties should rise above partisan interests to protect the constitution, and promote independence, good governance, and economic prosperity.
