Non-life insurers pay Rs 3.99 billion in claims in first two months

KATHMANDU: Non-life insurance companies paid out nearly Rs 4 billion in claims in the first two months of fiscal year 2026/27, as insurers continue to face mounting liabilities following the September 2025 Gen Z protests and the devastating floods on August 26.

Non-life insurers settled 23,839 claims worth Rs 3.99 billion by mid-September, according to the latest data. In the same period of the previous fiscal year, they had settled 22,382 claims worth Rs 3.25 billion.

Fourteen non-life insurance companies and three microinsurance companies engaged in non-life business are currently operating in Nepal.

The number of claims settled increased by 6.51% year-on-year, while the amount paid rose by 22.64%.

However, insurers’ outstanding liabilities remain a major concern, as the industry grapples with claims arising from successive disasters.

The September 2025 Gen Z protests significantly increased the financial exposure of non-life insurers after government buildings, private homes and business establishments were damaged by protesters. According to NIA, 3,390 claims worth Rs 23.19 billion were registered for the losses incurred on September 8 and 9. Insurers had paid only about Rs 8.82 billion, or just 38% of the claimed amount, by the first week of July.

The August 26 floods dealt another major blow to the insurers, who have not been able to fully settle claims arising from the September 2025 protests.

According to NIA, non-life companies have received claims totaling Rs 20.98 billion for damages caused by the devastating flood in the Bhotekoshi-Trishuli river corridor in Rasuwa on August 26.

According to the data, the number of outstanding claims reached 105,449 by mid-August while the amount awaiting settlement stood at Rs 40.95 billion.

There are 14 non-life insurance companies and Nepal and three microinsurance companies doing non-life business.
