KATHMANDU: The US Embassy in Kathmandu and Seven Summit Treks have showcased the successful high-altitude demonstration of an American-made drone in the Everest region.
The embassy said in a social media post on Monday that commercial American drone technology and Nepali mountain expertise proved what is possible in some of the world’s most demanding terrain.
The demonstration was carried out in partnership with The Coca-Cola Foundation using the US-manufactured Freefly Alta X Gen2 drone.
“In June, Nepali drone operators completed multiple flights on Ama Dablam between Base Camp at 4,600 meters and Yak Camp at approximately 5,050 meters, carrying oxygen cylinders and equipment across 1.6 kilometers of steep mountain terrain,” the embassy said in the social media post.
The embassy said the drone completed every flight despite strong winds and rapidly changing mountain weather, demonstrating the reliability and precision of American technology in one of the world’s most challenging environments.
According to the embassy, the technology could help reduce the physical burden on Sherpas, improve the safety of climbers, and enable faster and more efficient transportation of essential supplies during mountain expeditions.
“As the United States marks 250 years of independence, this collaboration carries forward the spirit of exploration and enterprise that has shaped America from its earliest days,” U.S. Embassy Chargé d’Affaires Scott Urbom said.
The embassy said the drone has broader applications beyond mountaineering, including expedition logistics, mountain clean-up operations, search and rescue missions, disaster response, and emergency deliveries in remote areas across Nepal.
