Rs 47.61 billion FDI commitment received in 11 months

KATHMANDU: Nepal received foreign direct investment (FDI) commitments worth Rs 47.61 billion in the first 11 months of the current fiscal year 2025/26.

According to data from the Department of Industry, the government approved a total of 914 FDI projects during the period. These projects have pledged to create 25,450 jobs.

In the first 11 months of the previous fiscal year, Nepal had received total FDI commitments worth Rs 60.6 billion for 717 projects.

The data shows that FDI approvals through the automatic route and approval route totaled 711 and 203, respectively, during the 11-month period. The total commitment through the automatic route stood at Rs 7.71 billion, while commitments through the normal approval route reached Rs 39.9 billion.

In the month of Jestha (mid-May to mid-June) alone, the government approved 186 FDI projects with total commitments of Rs 2.29 billion. Projects approved in Jestha alone are expected to create 1,221 new jobs.

The government also approved 53 Share Purchase Agreement/Special Approval (SPA/SAA) projects worth Rs 111.19 billion during the period. Likewise, 48 Technology Transfer Agreements (TTAs) were approved during the period.

Data show that 183 projects approved in Jestha are in the small industries segment, while the remaining three are in the medium segment. Likewise, of the total FDI investment commitments received over the first 11 months, 894 are for small-scale industries, 11 for medium-scale industries, and nine for large-scale industries.
In terms of commitment amount, the agriculture sector has received 46% of the total committed funds, or Rs 22.08 billion. Tourism was next, accounting for 27% of the committed amount, or Rs 12.99 billion, followed by services (Rs 4.59 billion), manufacturing (Rs 3.57 billion), ICT (Rs 2.36 billion), industries (Rs 1.65 billion), energy (Rs 234.25 billion), and mining (Rs 115 million).

Likewise, the largest number of industries is in the ICT sector (577). Tourism is next with 202 industries, followed by services (62), manufacturing (52), and agro and forestry-based industries (16). Similarly, two each are in the energy and mineral sectors, and one is in the infrastructure sector.
