KATHMANDU: Nepali leg-spinner Sandeep Lamichhane has become the fastest bowler in ODI history to claim 150 wickets. Lamichhane achieved the feat in just 73 ODIs.
He has surpassed Mitchell Starc of Australia who had reached 150 ODI wickets in 77 matches.
Lamichhane achieved the milestone when he took the second wicket in the ICC World Cricket League 2 match against Scotland at the TU International Cricket Stadium in Kathmandu on Monday. He took the scalp of Brandon McMullen on the final ball of the 20th over for his 150th ODI wicket.
He also holds the record for the fastest 100 ODI wickets, reaching the milestone in just 42 matches. He broke the record held by Afghan spinner Rashid Khan who had taken 44 matches to reach 100 ODI wickets.
Lamichhane’s first ODI wicket was Stephan Myburgh of the Netherlands. He took Myburgh’s wicket during Nepal’s inaugural ODI match against the Netherlands on August 1, 2018.
Likewise, his 100th ODI wicket was Adil Shafiq of Oman, which he took during an ACC Men’s Premier Cup match on April 21, 2023.
Lamichhane, one of Nepal’s most traveled cricketers, has also played franchise cricket leagues all over the world.
