KATHMANDU: Nepali political leaders have strongly opposed the arrest of Venezuelan President Nicolás Maduro by the US government, describing it as a violation of international law and national sovereignty.
Former Prime Minister Dr. Baburam Bhattarai said that the US actions in Venezuela constituted a blatant breach of the international system and international law established by the United Nations.
In a social media post on Sunday, Bhattarai condemned the attack on a UN member state and the abduction of its president. “The open attack by the US on Venezuela, a member of the United Nations, and the kidnapping of its president is a gross violation of the international system and international law established by the UN,” Bhattarai wrote.
He called on all sovereign states and the global community to strongly oppose and denounce such actions.
Similarly, CPN-UML General Secretary Shankar Pokhrel has termed the arrest of the Venezuelan president by the US objectionable. Pokhrel said in a social media post that the act of detaining an elected head of state of one country through military intervention, on the orders of another country’s leader, undermines the very relevance of the United Nations and other global institutions.
“The US intervention in Venezuela and the detention of President Nicolás Maduro have raised serious questions about international law, sovereignty and democratic values,” he wrote.
