KATHMANDU: Twenty-five Central Working Committee members from the establishment faction of the Nepali Congress (NC) have demanded that the party hold its 15th General Convention before the upcoming House of Representatives (HoR) election scheduled for March 5.
Submitting a memorandum at the party’s Central Office in Sanepa on Friday, they urged the leadership to use the General Convention as a preparation for the upcoming election.
These leaders, who were aligned with Party President Sher Bahadur Deuba’s camp during the 14th General Convention, said the upcoming convention should begin by December 1 to ensure a fruitful election for the party. “To ensure the success of the election scheduled for March 5, the 15th General Convention must be held by mid-December in accordance with the party statute. A timeline should be set and implemented to complete conventions at all organizational levels,” the memorandum reads.
They have also demanded that the first phase of the convention—renewal and distribution of active memberships—should be completed immediately by setting a deadline.
The memorandum further calls for amendments to the party statute to ensure substantial youth representation; immediate formation of an interim election committee; and meaningful participation of youth, women, Dalits, indigenous nationalities, Tharus, Madheshis, Muslims, citizens from disadvantaged regions, and persons with disabilities in the 15th General Convention.
These leaders have advised the party leadership to conduct extensive internal dialogue—from the ward level to the central level—on constitutional amendments to build the party’s common stance.
