KATHMANDU: The ‘Ujyalo Nepal Party,’ which is backed by Minister for Energy, Water Resources and Irrigation Kulman Ghising, has submitted its details to the Election Commission (EC).
According to the updated documents submitted to the EC on Tuesday, former Energy Secretary Anup Kumar Upadhyay is the Chairperson of the party. The party will have a 51-member Central Committee. Except Upadhyaya, all others have been listed as committee members.
The Central Committee includes prominent names like Dr Tara Prasad Joshi, Prof Dr Mahendra Sundar Lawati, Dr Ghanshyam Pandey, Dr Sagar Dhakal, Reema Bishwokarma and Tashi Lhanzom, among others. The party has requested ‘light bulb’ as its election symbol.
Although Ghising is not included in the Central Committee, sources close to him said he will be active during the election period.
According to Rastriya Swatantra Party (RSP) sources, Ghising—backed by Kathmandu Mayor Balen Shah and some Gen Z leaders—had earlier held multiple rounds of talks with the RSP leadership with a view to becoming its President. However, the RSP rejected Ghising’s proposal, offering him instead the position of Vice President, which he declined.
Following the breakdown of those talks, Ghising proceeded with the formation of the Ujyalo Nepal Party.
