KATHMANDU: The government has decided to declare 45 individuals who died during the Gen Z protests on September 8 and 9 as martyrs.
According to government spokesperson and Minister for Communications and Information Technology Jagdish Kharel, the Cabinet meeting held on Monday decided to recognize 45 people who lost their lives during the protests in Kathmandu and other parts of the country as martyrs.
Kharel said that the decision was made after studies conducted by the Ministry of Home Affairs and other concerned agencies. He added that further studies are ongoing regarding additional declarations.
The Cabinet also approved the Investigation, Truth-Seeking, and Reconciliation Fund Regulation, 2025, for missing persons. Additionally, it decided to allocate Rs 53 million from the Disaster Management Fund to provide relief to affected local governments in Ilam.
The meeting also appointed Joint Attorney General Ghanshyam Ojha as a member of the Foreign Employment Tribunal.
DOLAKHA: Eight climbers, including a Nepali guide, have gone missing and four others were injured after an avalanche struck a Mount Yalung Ri expedition team in Gaurishankar Rural Municipality-9 of Dolakha district on Monday morning.
According to local authorities, a 15-member team comprising both foreign and Nepali climbers had set out to scale the 5,630-meter Yalung Ri peak on October 27 (Kartik 11). The group was caught in an avalanche during the ascent, leaving several members trapped under snow.
Rescue efforts were launched soon after the incident. A joint rescue team of 50 personnel from the Armed Police Force Border Outpost (BOP) Lamabagar, the Nepal Army, and Nepal Police was deployed to the site on Monday evening.
Officials said challenging terrain and worsening weather conditions have made rescue operations difficult. The identities and nationalities of the missing climbers have not yet been confirmed.
Authorities said additional support and aerial reconnaissance will be mobilized as soon as weather permits.
