KATHMANDU: A new political party has been registered with the Election Commission at the initiative of Birendra Bahadur Basnet, the managing director of Buddha Air, the largest domestic airline of the country.
The Gatishil Loktantrik Party (GLP), registered with the EC on Thursday, states that party leaders and cadres can hold the same position for a maximum of two terms. The party has also stated that individuals holding executive committee positions and those assuming public office will be different and that no individual will be allowed to serve as a minister or prime minister more than two times.
Dr Dinesh Prasai is the Chairperson of the new party, while Bipush Prasad Kayastha is the General Secretary. Basnet is a member of the Executive Committee.
According to the party, all party activities will be monitored through open-source software to ensure transparency. “Except for the nearest election, in future elections, candidates will be selected through a primary process at the local level with the participation of all members,” it said.
The party has said that it is committed to good governance, entrepreneurship and equality across all regions of the country, and that it will appoint general secretaries for each agenda at the federal level and secretaries at the provincial and municipal levels.
“Entering politics for us is not a profession—it is an expression of our concern for the nation. We are introducing a pluralistic politics that upholds harmony and the culture of diversity,” it said. “For us, power is not a means of exploiting the state.”
