KATHMANDU: A total of 3,723 inmates who escaped from prisons across the country following the Gen Z protests of September 8–9 have been recaptured, police said.

According to Nepal Police Spokesperson Deputy Inspector General Binod Ghimire, 3,723 inmates have been brought back to different prisons so far.

Stating that 10,320 others are still at large, Ghimire urged the public to remain vigilant and to provide any information to the nearest police office or security agency.

He added that some escapees were caught by Indian police while attempting to flee across the border, while others were arrested by the Nepal Army, Nepal Police and Armed Police Force. A few have also returned voluntarily, he added.

According to Ghimire, police have recaptured 139 detainees who had escaped from custody at police stations during the protests. Some 2,100 detainees are still missing.
