KATHMANDU: Newly appointed Prime Minister Sushila Karki has formally assumed office.
Karki took charge at the Office of the Prime Minister and Council of Ministers in Singha Durbar on Sunday morning. Chief Secretary Ek Nath Aryal and other senior government officials welcomed Karki at Singha Durbar.
Former Chief Justice Karki was appointed as the head of the interim government on Friday, following the successful Gen Z protest that toppled the KP Sharma-led government last week. Immediately after her appointment, she recommended to President Ram Chandra Paudel the dissolution of the House of Representatives.
Although she took the oath of office and secrecy the same day she was appointed, she assumed her official duties two days later. At the office, she was welcomed by Chief Secretary Ek Narayan Aryal and other senior officials.
Karki is the first woman ever to be appointed Prime Minister of Nepal. She had earlier made history as the country’s first female Chief Justice.
