KATHMANDU: Nepal’s exports surged by an impressive 57.2% over the first eight months of the fiscal year 2024/25, compared to the same period in the previous fiscal year. According to foreign trade data released by the Department of Customs on Friday, Nepal exported goods worth Rs 158.17 billion in the review period up from Rs 100.61 billion in the same period of the previous fiscal year.
Despite the remarkable export growth, the trade deficit expanded by 6.22%, reaching Rs 987.39 billion by mid-March, compared to Rs 929.60 billion in mid-March of the previous year. Although Nepal is making significant progress in boosting exports, its reliance on imports continues to grow at a faster pace.
The total foreign trade volume for the review period reached Rs 1,303.7 billion, reflecting a 15.29% increase from Rs 1,130.84 billion in the corresponding period of the previous fiscal year.
Imports during this period—from mid-July to mid-March of the current fiscal year—rose by 11.20% to Rs 1,145.56 billion, up from Rs 1,030.22 billion in the same period last year.
The data also reveals that exports accounted for 12.13% of total trade, marking a 36.35% increase from 8.9% during the same eight-month period in the previous fiscal year.
