KATHMANDU: Nepal Electricity (NEA) exported electricity worth Rs 12.71 billion to India in the four months of the rainy season.
The utility exported 166.78 million units of surplus electricity from the Nepali months of Saun (mid-July) to Kartik (mid-November).
The average rate of electricity exported to India in these four months was Rs 7.63 per unit.
NEA has been selling its surplus energy through the day-ahead and real-time markets of the Indian Energy Exchange (IEX) at competitive rates. Likewise, it has been supplying electricity to Haryana and Bihar states of India through medium-term bilateral agreements
Nepal has also begun exporting electricity to Bangladesh using India’s transmission infrastructure. However, electricity could be exported for only one day this season as Nepal is allowed to export electricity to Bangladesh from July 15 to November 15 only.
NEA Executive Director Kulman Ghising said floods and landslides in the last week of September caused damages to several hydropower projects and transmission lines which affected electricity export this season. “Our largest hydropower project, the 456-megawatt Upper Tamakoshi, has suspended production due to landslide damage. Similar other small projects have halted generation due to damage in their infrastructure,” NEA Executive Director Kul Man Ghising said.
The utility had earned Rs 17.06 billion by exporting electricity to India in fiscal year 2023/24.
NEA has received permission to export a total of 914 MW to India.
