Up to Rs 10 million to be released for 71 crisis-hit local units

KATHMANDU: The National Disaster Management Executive Committee has decided to release relief funds to 71 local governments affected by the recent floods and landslides.

A meeting of the committee, chaired by Minister for Home Affairs Ramesh Lekhak at the office of the National Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Authority, took the decision on Thursday.

On October 6, the government published a notice in the Nepal Gazette declaring 71 local units across 20 districts as crisis-hit areas. The flood- and landslide-affected areas have been categorized into three tiers. The worst-hit nine local units have been categorized as first tier and will receive Rs 10 million each.

Likewise, 12 local units categorized as second tier will receive Rs 7.5 million, and the remaining 50 local units categorized as third tier will receive Rs 5 million each.

Floods and landslides triggered by heavy rains on September 27 and 28 claimed at least 240 lives across the country.
