KATHMANDU: CPN (Maoist Center) Chairperson Pushpa Kamal Dahal has said that a thorough discussion is needed to decide whether to impose a statute of limitations on registering corruption cases.
Speaking at the meeting of the State Affairs and Good Governance Committee of the House of Representatives on Thursday, Dahal said that the issue of preventing corruption is not merely a legal or technical matter. “A well-considered decision must be taken on whether a statute of limitations is needed. The discussion is ongoing at present. We should arrive at a conclusion only after thorough deliberation,” he added.
The former Prime Minister also underlined the need to update corruption-related laws to suit the current context. “Once the Commission for the Investigation of Abuse of Authority (CIAA) files a corruption case, the accused is immediately suspended. We also need to consider whether compensation should be provided to charge-sheeted individuals in case they are later declared innocent by the court,” he added.
Dahal said parties need to decide whether suspension should occur immediately or only after a court verdict. “Should there be a provision for compensation if found innocent? These matters require thorough discussion,” he added.
