KATHMANDU: The government has confirmed the death of 16 more Nepalis who were working for the Russian army.

Prakash Mani Poudel, director general of the Department of Consular Services, told Himal Press that the Russian Foreign Ministry has provided details of 16 more Nepalis who died while fighting for Russia.

The deceased have been identified as Jit Bahadur Pun Magar of Dang, Tika Bahadur Rana Magar of Terhathum, Somesh Sunar of Pyuthan, Chandra Prakash BC of Banke, Prem Bahadur Kathayat of Achham, Khom Kumar Bhujel of Okhaldhunga, Bimal Kumar Gajmer of Dhanusha, Bijaya Bahadur Thokar of Makwanpur, Gayananda Sah, Ghanashyam Shahi, and Biaks Rai of Morang, and Prem Prakash Neupane and Bhim Bahadur BC of Nawalparasi.

The addresses of three other deceased – Abhishek Budha, Kshitij Basnet, and Jit Bahadur Ghising – have not been mentioned in the list, according to Poudel.

With this, the number of Nepalis who died while fighting for Russia has reached 36. Five others, who were serving in the Russian army, have been taken as war prisoners by Ukraine.

Poudel said families of 500 youths serving in the Russian Army have filed applications with the department requesting to find their whereabouts. “Necessary work is being done through the Nepali embassy in Moscow to get information about other Nepalis who have joined the Russian army,” he added.
