US, Wales share spoils

KATHMANDU: US and Wales played a 1-1 draw in their opening matches of Group B at Al Rayyan Monday.

Timothy Weah scored a beautiful goal for the US in the 36th minute, but Gareth Bale equalized for the European side from the spot late in the second half.

The US was comparatively stronger in the first half. Following a long spell of pressure, Crtisitan Pulilsic drove the ball on the counterattack and supplied a perfect pass to Weah who cleverly scored from the box.

Wales came back stronger in the second half but failed to find the US goal. As the US was heading for victory, Wales captain Gareth Bale was fouled inside the boxy by Walker Zimmerman. He scored from the resulting penalty to level the score 1-1.

Netherlands defeat Senegal 2-0
Earlier, the Netherlands scored two late goals to defeat Senegal in the Group A match at Al Thumama Stadium.

Though the Dutch dominated the match, they had to wait till the 85th minute to take the lead.

PSV Eindhoven forward Cody Gakpo headed in a Frankie de Jong cross to give his side a 1-0 lead before Klassen tapped in in the injury time of the second half after Mendy was forced to parry Memphis Depay’s powerful strike on his path.
