Revival of insurgency-era cases will push country into conflict: Dr Bhattarai

KATHMANDU: Nepal Samajbadi Party (NSP) President Dr Babu Ram Bhattarai said a conspiracy is being hatched to push the country back into the conflict by reviving insurgency-era cases.

Talking to journalists in Gorkha on Wednesday, Dr Bhattarai said some forces were trying to push the country back into conflict. “They have created some proxies,” he added.

Stating that the Comprehensive Peace Accord (CPA) has addressed all the issues related to the armed struggle, Dr Bhattarai said any remaining cases are to be dealt with by the Truth And Reconciliation Commission and the Commission of Investigation on Enforced Disappeared Persons.

“Continuing to raise every issue connected to the armed struggle would be detrimental and could potentially reignite conflicts. It is an irresponsible act,” Dr Bhattarai said.

Dr Bhattarai was referring to a writ petition filed at the Supreme Court against him and Prime Minister Pushpa Kamal Dahal for using child soldiers in the decade-long armed struggle waged by the then CPN (Maoist). After hearing the petition on Tuesday, the Supreme Court has sought a written reply from Dahal and Bhattarai.

While Dahal was the commander of the armed struggle, Bhattarai was the head of the parallel government formed by Maoist rebels.
