Remote Dolpa connected to national electricity grid

KATHMANDU: Remote Dolpa district has been connected to the national electricity grid.

Nepal Electricity Authority (NEA) started supplying electricity to Dolpa district on Thursday by building an 11 kV transmission line from the substation in Musikot of Rukum West.

With this, eight out of 10 districts of the Karnali Province now have grid connectivity. Only Mugu and Humla in the province do not have grid connectivity yet.

According to NEA, the construction of a transmission line to expand electricity services to Mugu is underway.

Kulman Ghising, executive director of NEA, said the utility has put electrification in Karnali Province as a high priority. “The national grid has now reached Dolpa. It will expand to Mugu by the end of the current fiscal year,” Ghising said. “Likewise, NEA has already procured construction services to build a transmission line to Humla. The work will begin soon.”

NEA has also been supplying electricity in Thuli Bheri and Tripura Sundari municipalities of Dolpa through the Jairigad Hydroelectric Project of 200 kilowatts. Likewise, NEA is building a 33 kV transmission line from the Kudu substation of Jajarkot to Tripurakot of Dolpa to ensure an uninterrupted power supply to the district.

NEA is implementing electrification projects in remote hilly districts of Lumbini, Karnali and Sudurpashchim by using a concessional loan of Rs 28 billion from the Asian Infrastructure Investment Bank (AIIB) and the European Investment Bank (EIB).
