Home ministry told to investigate AIG Gyawali’s citizenship certificate

KATHMANDU: The Commission for the Investigation of Abuse of Authority (CIAA) has directed the Ministry of Home Affairs to investigate the citizenship certificate of Shyamlal Gyawali, who was promoted to the position of Additional Inspector General (AIG) of Nepal Police on Monday.

CIAA took the decision after it began a preliminary investigation into a complaint registered by Sher Bahadur Chand of Kaiali. In his complaint, Chand has alleged that Gyawali falsified his date of birth to enter the police force.

Bhola Dahal, the spokesperson for the CIAA, stated that a preliminary investigation into the matter has already commenced and the inquiry is ongoing. The request to investigate Gyawali’s citizenship certificate is part of this investigation, he added.

Gyawali obtained his citizenship certificate from the District Administration Office, Pyuthan, on April 3, 1984, where his date of birth was recorded as being 17 years old. However, when he joined the police force in 1993 as a Police Inspector, his official date of birth was recorded as September 10, 1968. This discrepancy has raised concerns, as Gyawali’s date of birth is also different on his academic certificates.
