KATHMANDU: Nepal is observing a national day of mourning on Monday to pay tribute to passengers and crew members who passed away in a plane crash in Pokhara Sunday morning.
The cabinet meeting held on Sunday took the decision, according to Deputy Prime Minister and Minister for Finance Bishnu Poudel.
Among others, the cabinet also decided to form a five-member probe team to identify the cause of the accident and make needful recommendations to the government to avoid such accidents in the future. The probe team is led by former secretary Nagendra Ghimire. It includes retired captain of Nepal Army Deepak Prakash Bastola, retired pilot Sunil Thapa and aircraft maintenance engineer Ekraj Jung Thapa. Joint secretary Buddhi Sagar Lamichhane is the member secrtary of the probe team.
The meeting also decided to conduct a technical examination of all aircraft operating on domestic destinations.
The ATR 72-500 aircraft of Yeti Airlines crashed at the Seti River gorge near Pokhara Airport on Sunday. Sixty-eight passengers and four crew members were in the aircraft.
Three persons have been rescued from the crash site and sent to Gandaki Province Hospital for treatment. Likewise, rescue workers have recovered 40 bodies so far.
