KATHMANDU: Speaker Dol Prasad Aryal is leaving for Tanzania on Sunday to participate in the 153rd Inter-Parliamentary Union (IPU) Assembly.

Speaking to journalists on Friday, Speaker Aryal said the meeting would provide an important opportunity to tell the international community about the recent floods and landslides in Nepal and the impacts of climate change.

“I will use the assembly to highlight the impacts of climate change internationally,” he added. “Although Nepal has made a negligible contribution to global carbon emissions, it has suffered significant losses from climate-related disasters. I will raise the issue before speakers and lawmakers from around the world.”

Aryal said Nepal was preparing to introduce an emergency agenda at the IPU meeting. The Ministry of Foreign Affairs and the Nepali delegation are working to get the agenda adopted and bring the issue into the international discussion, he added.

The 153rd Assembly of the IPU is being held in Arusha of Tanzania on October 5-9.

Established in 1889, the IPU is the global organization of 183 national parliaments and 15 associate members.
