KATHMANDU: Remittance inflows increased by 15.5% to Rs 1,532.93 billion in the first 11 months of the fiscal year 2024/25.

According to the latest Macroeconomic Situation Report unveiled by Nepal Rastra Bank (NRB) on Tuesday, remittances had grown at a higher rate of 17.2% in the same period of the previous fiscal year. Although the growth rate moderated, remittance inflows are still at a robust pace.

In US dollar terms, remittance inflows rose by 12.7%, totaling $11.25 billion during the review period, compared to a 15.2% rise in the same period of 2023/24.

According to the report, remittance flows peaked in the month of Jestha (mid-May to mid-June 2025), reaching Rs 176.32 billion. This marks a sharp increase from Rs 128.91 billion recorded during the same month last year.

The strong remittance growth is supported by a significant increase in labour migration. According to the NRB data, a total of 452,324 Nepalis obtained first-time approvals for foreign employment during the review period. This represents an increase from 421,356 approvals during the same period of the previous fiscal year. Additionally, 308,067 individuals received re-entry approvals, approvals sought by those returning to their foreign jobs, up from 261,210 in the previous year.

Remittance is the largest source of foreign currency for Nepal and plays a critical role in sustaining household consumption, supporting the balance of payments and boosting foreign exchange reserves.
