Panta, Sherpa elected National Assembly committee chairs

KATHMANDU: Kamala Devi Panta of the Nepali Congress and Sonam Gyalzen Sherpa have been unanimously elected as the chairpersons of two thematic committees of the National Assembly.

Panta has been elected as the chairperson of the Development, Economic Affairs, and Good Governance Committee, while Gyalzen has been elected as the chair of the Federalism Strengthening and National Concerns Committee.

National Assembly Chairperson Narayan Prasad Dahal administered the oath of office and secrecy to Panta and Sherpa during a ceremony on Monday.

Panta is from the Nepali Congress, while Gyalzen is a CPN-UML lawmaker.

National Assembly committee chairs have a tenure of two years.

Speaking after her swearing ceremony, Panta expressed belief that she would play an active role in maintaining good governance and effectively raising important issues, including economic empowerment. “Good governance is not possible until corruption is controlled. The committee will focus its work in this direction,” she added.

Likewise, Sherpa expressed commitment to work towards the formulation of the required laws.
