KATHMANDU: Padam Limbu (Lajihang), who lost his life during the agitation against the naming of Koshi Province, has been officially declared a martyr.
According to Minister for Culture, Tourism and Civil Aviation, Sudhan Kirati, the decision was made by the cabinet meeting held on Friday. The government has also pledged to provide support to Limbu’s family.
Limbu sustained injuries during a protest against the naming of Koshi Province in Biratnagar on March 19. He passed away while receiving treatment at BP Koirala Institute of Health Sciences on March 24.
The Koshi Province Government has already decided to provide Rs 300,000 as compensation to the next of kin of Limbu. Additionally, a committee has been formed to investigate the incident.
Protestors have been taking to the streets since March 1, opposing the naming of Koshi Province. The have been saying that the province should be named based on its identity.
