NHRC, UN Women sign MoU to advance gender quality, human rights

KATHMANDU: National Human Rights Commission, Nepal (NHRC) and the United Nations Entity for Gender Equality and the Empowerment of Women (UN Women) have signed a five-year memorandum of understanding (MoU) to strengthen collaboration for advancing gender equality and human rights in Nepal.

Through the partnership with UN Women, NHRC aims at enhancing human rights in Nepal, focusing on gender equality and women’s empowerment, a statement issued on Monday said.

The MoU highlights two key areas for collaboration – capacity building of NHRC staff on gender equality and gender mainstreaming, and policy dialogue, advocacy, and monitoring on gender equality and women’s empowerment in compliance of human rights standards and commitments of Nepal, according to the statement.

Addressing the signing ceremony, Top Bahadur Magar, Chairperson of NHRC, said it was important to enhance NHRC’s capacities on gender equality to fulfill its constitutional mandate of protecting the human rights of all.

Similarly, Navanita Sinha, Head of Office of UN Women Nepal shared that UN Women’s partnership with NHRC is critical to advance women’s rights and ensuring the international human rights commitments are implemented in Nepal.
