KATHMANDU: The National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) has summoned SSP Santosh Khadka, chief of the Kathmandu Valley Crime Investigation Office, for questioning.
Khadka was summoned in connection with Sunday’s arrest of former Chief Justice Cholendra Shumsher Rana by the Kathmandu Valley Crime Investigation Office.
NHRC spokesperson Dr Tikaram Pokharel said Khadka had been summoned for questioning at 11:30 a.m. Tuesday.
“He has been summoned for questioning regarding Sunday’s incident,” Pokharel told Himal Press.
Police took Rana into custody at around 3 a.m. Sunday, citing a security threat, and brought him to the Kathmandu Valley Crime Investigation Office in Teku. After keeping him at the office for nearly 12 hours, police handed him over to his family, saying they would provide security at his residence.
Police said they had taken Rana into custody after discussions on the social media platform Discord about potentially harming him came to their attention.
The NHRC had also sought to monitor the incident. An NHRC team reached the Kathmandu Valley Crime Investigation Office on Sunday. However, police did not allow the team to meet Rana.
The NHRC issued a statement Sunday expressing concern over being denied access to the former chief justice.
“Our team had reached the police office to monitor the arrest of the former chief justice, but it was not allowed to carry out the monitoring. He has been summoned for discussion on this matter,” Pokharel said.
