KATHMANDU: The government has reiterated that former Chief Justice Cholendra Shumsher Rana was neither arrested nor taken into custody.
Speaking to journalists after the cabinet meeting on Tuesday, government spokesperson and Minister for Education and Sports Sasmit Pokhrel said reports that Rana had been arrested were untrue.
“It is already clear that he was neither arrested nor taken into custody,” he said. “His family had also submitted a request to the police seeking additional security for him.”
He said Rana was moved to a safe location after the police received a request from his family for security.
“After concerns were raised about his security, he was rescued and taken from there to provide him protection. There was no intention to detain or arrest him,” spokesperson Pokhrel said.
Asked why Rana was provided security, Pokhrel said police were investigating the matter related to the security threat. He said the government had not confirmed that Rana had received threats from any particular group.
“It was not a threat from the Gen Z group. After he received threats from an unidentified group through phone calls and text messages, he was moved to a safe location,” he said.
