Nepse sheds 30 points as investors react negatively to new monetary policy

KATHMANDU: The Nepal Stock Exchange (Nepse) index fell sharply on Wednesday, reversing the previous session’s gains, as investors reacted negatively to the Monetary Policy for Fiscal Year 2026/27 unveiled by Nepal Rastra Bank (NRB) on Tuesday.

The benchmark index shed 30.09 points to close at 2,617.23, erasing Tuesday’s 24.57-point gain.

The market came under pressure right after trading began on Wednesday morning and remained in the negative territory throughout the session. Although a slight recovery after hitting the intraday low of 2,610.53 points helped pare some losses, the index ended the session 1.13% lower.

Market breadth was heavily negative on Wednesday as unit prices of 247 scrips declined during the session. Only 25 scrips advanced and five remained unchanged. Despite Nepse’s decline, total turnover improved to Rs 4.82 billion, with 8.46 million units traded through 77,627 transactions.

Among individual scrips, NMB Debenture 8.5% 2083/84 logged the biggest gain of 5.52% on Wednesday. 10% Prabhu Bank Debenture 2084 and Snow Rivers Ltd followed with gains of 4.67% and 4.39%, respectively. Corporate Development Bank led the losing stocks with a loss of 13.41%. Next were Upakar Laghubitta Bittiya Sanstha Ltd and Sanigad Hydropower Ltd with losses of 10.69% and 6.36%, respectively.

On the other hand, 11% Kumari Bank Ltd Debenture 2089 logged the highest turnover of Rs 623.91 million. 9.5% NCC Debenture 2086 and 8.5% Sanima Debenture 2087 followed with total turnovers of Rs 436.07 million and Rs 219.39 million, respectively.

Except for the Mutual Fund sub-index, which posted a nominal 0.11%, all trading groups ended the session in the red. The biggest loss came from the Hydropower sub-index, which came down by 1.7%. Next were the Development Bank and Finance sub-indices with losses of 1.46% and 1.43%, respectively.
