Nepal Police proposes to create three new positions of DIGs

KATHMANDU: Nepal Police has proposed to create three new positions of Deputy Inspector Generals (DIGs).

According to sources at the Nepal Police headquarters, the police leadership has proposed to create positions for DIGs to head the cyber cell in the Central Investigation Bureau (CIB), and to lead the Canine Division and the Central Police Forensic Lab.

The Ministry of Home Affairs has forwarded Nepal Police’s proposal to the Ministry of Finance. “We have received Nepal Police’s proposal to create three positions of DIG. The proposal is currently being studied,” Home Ministry spokesperson Narayan Prasad Bhattarai said.

Police sources say the police leadership has already prepared police personnel to head these positions.

Inspector General Basanta Bahadur Kunwar has been accused of trying to create a new post of DIG at the CIB to promote SSP Nabinda Aryal to the position of DIG. If the post is created as proposed, SSP Aryal will be the only one police personnel eligible for promotion. Once he is promoted to DIG, Kunwar plans to name him to head the CIB.

Likewise, SSP Dr. Deuti Gurung is the only eligible police personnel for promotion to DIG if the position of DIG is created for the Canine Division.

Sources say the finance ministry has already given the go-ahead to create two positions of DIGs at CIB and the Canine Division. The proposal to create a position of DIG in the Central Police Forensic Lab is still under discussion, a source at the Nepal Police Headquarters told Himal Press.
