Need for coalition will depend on the situation: Deuba

KATHMANDU: Nepali Congress President Sher Bahadur Deuba has said that any decision about forming an electoral alliance will depend on the situation.

Speaking at the Mahasamiti meeting that kicked off in Godavari on Monday, Deuba said there is no alternative to forming a coalition as it is not possible to gain a majority in the existing electoral system. Deuba also insisted that pursuing an alliance in the election is a political responsibility that NC should undertake.

“Now we are in a coalition government. This alliance was not formed 10 months ago only,” Deuba said. “After the dissolution of the House of Representatives and efforts to weaken the federal democratic republic were made, NC felt the need to form an alliance under its leadership,” he said. “The current government is a continuation of this alliance.”

Deuba’s comments have come at a time when most of the leaders of the party are stating that NC should stop forming coalitions and contest the election on its own.

Deuba also said there was a need to make amendments to the party statute to make the document updated and relevant.

Stating that the constitution is a dynamic document, Deuba said all should move forward by addressing complexities and lack of clarity in its implementation.

Deuba also said NC shouldn’t break people’s trust in the party. “We are a strong party now. A lot of people have trust and faith in this party. We shouldn’t let these people down,” he added.

He said that the Mahasamiti meeting was organized to dwell on the party ideologies as the 14th general convention was focused on electing the new leadership only.
