KATHMANDU: National Assembly Vice Chairperson Urmila Aryal has tendered her resignation.

Aryal submitted her resignation to National Assembly Chairperson Narayan Prasad Dahal on Thursday. Both Dahal and Aryal are from the CPN (Maoist Center).

She was unanimously elected to the position on February 5 last year.
Although Prime Minister and CPN (Maoist Center) Pushpa Kamal Dahal had promised to elevate Aryal to the position of National Assembly chairperson, he later appointed his brother Narayan to the position.

Aryal had met Maoist Center Chairperson Dahal about a fortnight ago and offered to step down. She had also requested him to appoint her as the Maoist Center’s parliamentary party leader in the lower house – a a position currently held by Deputy Prime Minister and Minister for Foreign Affairs Narayan Kaji Shrestha.

Although the coalition had initially agreed to elect UML’s member in the upper house as the National Assembly Chairperson, the second agreement that the five coalition partners signed later on says nothing about the position of National Assembly Vice Chairperson.
