Narayan Dahal sworn in as National Assembly chair

KATHMANDU: Newly elected National Assembly Chairperson Narayan Dahal was sworn in on Tuesday.

President Ram Chandra Poudel administered the oath of office and secrecy to Dahal amid a ceremony organized at the Office of the President on Tuesday afternoon.

Vice President Ramsahay Prasad Yadav, Prime Minister Pushpa Kamal Dahal, Speaker Dev Raj Ghimire, and Chief Justice Bishwambhar Prasad Shrestha, among others, were present at the swearing-in ceremony.

Talking to the media following his election to the post, Dahal said he would work to uphold the dignity of the upper house. “My efforts will be on establishing the belief that this institution is of utmost importance for the country,” Dahal added.

Dahal was elected National Assembly chairperson on Tuesday morning by defeating Yuvaraj Sharma of Nepali Congress. Dahal, who is the brother of Prime Minister and CPN (Maoist Center) Chairperson Pushpa Kamal Dahal, had the support of four parties of the ruling alliance – CPN-UML, Maoist Center, CPN (Unified Socialist), and Janata Samajbadi Party.
