Nagarik Unmukti lawmaker denied stay order by Dipayal High Court

KATHMANDU:  The Dipayal High Court has rejected a request for a stay on the decision to send Nagarik Unmukti Party lawmaker Arun Kumar Chaudhary to jail.

A single bench of Judge Arjun Prasad Koirala, however, issued show cause notices to District Attorney’s Office, Kaiali and District Police Office, Kailali.

According to Nara Bahadur Negi, the information officer of the high court, the high court has asked the District Attorney Office, Kaiali and District Police Office, Kailali to provide evidence within 15 days as to why an interim order cannot be issued.

The next hearing has been scheduled for February 12. The high court has ordered both defendants and plaintiffs to attend the hearing.

The District Court, Kailali had sentenced Chaudhary to a 6-month jail term and fined him Rs 819,000 for setting a tractor on fire 13 years ago. He had been evading the verdict since it was delivered. Chaudhary was arrested by police in Banke on February 2.

He was elected to the House of Representatives from the Kailali-2 constituency in the November 20 election.
