KATHMANDU: CPN (Maoist Center), which voted to name the easternmost province as ‘Koshi Province’, has made a U-turn, stating that is for naming the province on the basis of identity.
A meeting of the office-bearers of the party held on Wednesday also decided to show the party’s solidarity with the ongoing protest in eastern Nepal against the naming of the province.
Party spokesperson Krishna Bahadur Mahara told media persons that the party has acknowledged that the previous naming decision was a mistake and that they are now in favor of a name that reflects the identity of the province.
Although the province assembly has the authority to make the final decision on the name, the Maoist Center has said it is in favor of naming the province based on identity.
The party also declared Padam Limbu, who lost his life during the protests, a martyr and pledged to provide appropriate compensation to his family.
