KATHMANDU: The Department of Hydrology and Meteorology (DoHM) has urged people to remain on high alert, warning that heatwave conditions are likely to continue in some Tarai districts until Thursday.

According to the DoHM, maximum temperatures in the Tarai regions of Lumbini and Sudurpaschim provinces exceeded 40°C on Tuesday afternoon. Temperatures reached 43°C in Dhangadhi and Nepalgunj, 44°C in Bhairahawa, and 33°C in Kathmandu.

Meteorologist Binu Maharjan said that the eastern parts of the country are likely to remain hot until Saturday, while the western regions may experience high temperatures for a few more days. She advised people to avoid going outdoors during the afternoon unless necessary, stay in cool and well-ventilated places, wear light and loose clothing, and drink plenty of water and fluids.

The DoHM has said that hot winds and high temperatures may lead to health issues such as fatigue, excessive thirst, headaches, eye irritation, dizziness, and fainting. Children, the elderly, and people with chronic illnesses are particularly at risk, it added.
