KATHMANDU: The government has decided to hold the election for vacant 19 seats in the National Assembly on January 25.

A cabinet meeting held on Monday took the decision, according to Minister for Communications and Information Technology Rekha Sharma.

Earlier, the Election Commission (EC) had proposed to hold the National Assembly election on January 25.

Twenty seats in the upper house, including one to be recommended by the President, are becoming vacant on March 4. As per the National Assembly Election Act, 2017, the election should be held 35 days before the seats become vacant. This means the election should be held by January 29.

The National Assembly consists of 59 members, with eight members elected from each of the seven provinces, and three appointed by the President. Members are elected by an electoral college comprising the mayor/chairperson and deputy mayor/vice chairperson of municipal bodies across the country.
