Everest Adventure Tourism and Cultural Carnival organized in Beijing

BEIJING: The Embassy of Nepal in Beijing marked the 70th anniversary of Nepal-China diplomatic relations by organising the ‘Nepal-China Everest Adventure Tourism and Cultural Carnival 2025’ on Monday.

The event celebrated the achievements of Everest climbers and underscored the importance of the Himalayas in the face of growing climate challenges.

The event brought together around 300 participants, including diplomats, Chinese officials, climbers, businesspeople and members of the Nepali community. It featured stories of hardship, bravery, and environmental commitment from both Nepali and Chinese climbers.

“We are turning beautiful mountains into heaps of waste,” said Hu Tao, who recently reached the summit of Mt Kangchenjunga, said.

Another Chinese climber and philanthropist, Wang Shi, the founder of Vanke Foundation and Deep Rock Group, expressed commitment to climb Mt Everest for the third time at the age of 81 and continue advocating for mountain cleanliness.

Three Chinese and three Nepali climbers shared their mountaineering journeys and personal reflections during the event. Nepali climbers Mingma G and Mingma Sherpa said the interest of Chinese climbers toward Nepali mountains is growing. Similarly, Purnima Shrestha, who made a record three ascents of Everest within 13 days in a single season, encouraged women and youth to pursue adventure. “I’ve learned that no dream is too big. We can make even the impossible happen,” she added.

On the occasion, the Ambassador of Nepal to China, Dr Krishna Prasad Oli, honoured 70 Chinese and three Nepali climbers. Calling Everest a ‘living symbol’ of Nepal-China friendship, Oli said every summit and every expedition takes the bilateral relationship to new heights.

Video messages from Nepal’s Minister for Culture, Tourism and Civil Aviation Badri Prasad Pandey and Chinese Ambassador to Nepal Chen Song were presented during the program.

Senior Manager of Nepal Tourism Board (NTB), Archana KC Rana, made a presentation on mountaineering and adventure tourism in Nepal.

In her video message, ICIMOD Director General Pema Gyamtsho, through a video message, called on stakeholders to help keep Everest pollution-free.

On the occasion, eight organisations working in the Himalayan region of Nepal and China jointly issued a China-Nepal Environmental Declaration to promote mountain conservation, clean expeditions and eco-friendly tourism.
