KATHMANDU: Deputy Prime Minister and Minister for Foreign Affairs Narayan Kaji Shrestha has said that the government is making every possible effort for the rescue of Nepalis working for the Russian army and those taken as prisoners of war by the Ukrainian army.

Speaking in the meeting of the House of Representatives on Monday, Shrestha said he had a conversation with his Ukrainian counterpart about the release of Nepalis under the control of the Ukrainian army.

The Ukrainian government on Friday made public the identity of eight youths who were arrested as prisoners of war while serving in the Russian Army. Five of them have been identified as Nepalis.

“The Russian government has begun the process of providing compensation to the next of kin of youths who died while serving in its army. Likewise, positive initiatives are being made to scrap contract documents that Nepali youths have signed with the Russian army and bring them home,” Shrestha added.

Likewise, Shrestha expressed commitment to strictly implement the diplomatic code of conduct and urged everyone to show seriousness on issues related to national interest and foreign relations.
