Durbar Marg, Thamel to open for 24 hours

KATHMANDU: The government has begun preparations to open the tourist areas of Thamel and Darbar Marg in Kathmandu around the clock.

Jitendra Basnet, the chief district officer (CDO) of Kathmandu, said that preparations are underway to keep Thamel and Darbar Marg market areas open for 24 hours on the instructions of Deputy Prime Minister and Minister for Home Affairs Rabi Lamichhane.

The District Administration Office, Kathmandu, will be responsible for security and other management in those areas. “The District Security Committee will make a plan accordingly. Internal preparations have already begun,” Basnet said. “These two areas will be open round the year before the New Year’s Day i.e. mid-April.”

According to Basnet, the local administration will make additional plans and implement them after studying problems and reactions that arise after the markets become operational 24 hours.

“Learning lessons from Thamel and Darbar Marg, the home ministry has a plan to gradually open other tourist areas for 24 hours as well,” he added.
