Dedicated desk to be set up in all 77 districts to combat cyber crimes

KATHMANDU: The Ministry of Home Affairs has instructed all District Administration Offices and District Police Offices to set up a separate desk to control cyber crimes occurring through social media platforms like Facebook, X (formerly Twitter) and others.

The local administration has also been given the responsibility to take action against those who spread propaganda through online news portals and social media platforms as well as print media.

“Set up a dedicated desk with one officer-level employee each at the District Police Office and the District Administration Office to control activities such as spreading baseless and misleading information, inciting racial and cultural tensions, compromising national unity, territorial integrity and sovereignty, and posting content that violates one’s right to privacy, defames public reputation and dignity and promotes obscenity. Take needful against the guilty as per the prevailing laws,” the home ministry’s instruction reads.

Additionally, the ministry has also said that all government offices must conduct security audits of the websites and software they have developed at the district level through the Department of Information Technology.

The Ministry has instructed its subordinate agencies to enhance their investigation capabilities and coordinate with Nepal Police’s Cyber Bureau for cases that cannot be resolved at the district level.
