Dahal meets Oli to prepare for Constitutional Council meeting

KATHMANDU: Prime Minister Pushpa Kamal Dahal met with KP Sharma Oli, chairman of CPN-UML and the leader of the main opposition party in the House of Representatives, on Sunday.

Sources at the Prime Minister’s Secretariat said that Dahal invited Oli for the meeting to prepare for the Constitutional Council to recommend the next Chief Justice.

The incumbent Chief Justice, Hari Krishna Karki, is set to retire due to age grounds within a few days. According to the existing provision, his successor should be recommended a month before his retirement.

However, the government hasn’t been able to hold the Constitutional Council meeting because Prime Minister Pushpa Kamal Dahal was attending a UN conference in Italy. He returned home on Friday.

The Constitutional Council, chaired by the Prime Minister, includes the Chief Justice, the Speaker of the House of Representatives, the National Assembly Chairperson, the Leader of the Main Opposition Party, and the Deputy Speaker as its members.

The Minister for Law, Justice, and Parliamentary Affairs replaces the Chief Justice in the Council in the meetings regarding the appointment of the next Chief Justice.
