Court orders KMC not to demolish RPP headquarters

KATHMANDU: The Patan High Court has issued a short-term interim order preventing the Kathmandu Metropolitan City from demolishing the building that houses the headquarters of the Rastriya Prajatantra Party (RPP) until the final verdict is passed.

A single bench of High Court Judge Durga Bahadur Bishwakarma issued the order responding to a writ petition filed by Prabha Chapagain.

Last month, KMC dispatched a team equipped with various machines to carry out the demolition of the building situated in Dhumbarahi locality of Kathmandu.

Noting that demolishing the building without the petitioner’s consent and without adhering to proper legal procedures could infringe upon her property rights and lead to irreparable losses, the court, in an order dated August 16, directed the defendants to not demolish the building for the time being.

KMC had decided to raze the building as it was constructed beneath a high-tension line and by flouting building standards.
