KATHMANDU: The death toll from the floods that swept into the Bhotekoshi River, known downstream as the Trishuli, has reached 669.
According to Nepal Police, 669 bodies have been recovered from flood-affected areas as of 4 p.m. Saturday.
Data released by the Nepal Police show 248 bodies were recovered in Chitwan, 168 in Nawalparasi East, 75 in Nawalparasi West, 54 in Gorkha, 41 in Nuwkot, 49 in Dhading, 31 in Tanahun and 13 in Rasuwa.
Several others, including foreign tourists, are still missing. According to the National Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Authority (NDRRMA), 2,426 people are unaccounted for since Wednesday morning’s flood. They include 933 associated with several hydropower projects, 517 foreign nationals, 127 Nepali citizens residing abroad, 27 Nepal Police personnel, 45 Nepali Army personnel, 13 Armed Police Force personnel, 15 customs office staff, four immigration office staff and three Langtang National Park staff.
Similarly, 562 people are reported missing from Rasuwa, 115 from Nuwakot and 65 from Makwanpur.
A study of satellite images suggests a glacier and rock collapse on the northern slopes of Langtang Lirung sent ice and debris into the Lhende River that forms the Nepal-China boundary. The debris blocked the river flow before a massive surge of water and debris traveled into the Bhotekoshi, leaving a trail of destruction in Rasuwa, Nuwakot and Dhading, among other districts.
