Bangladesh lifts SAFF U-16 Women’s Championship title

KATHMANDU: Yearzan Begum saved three penalties as Bangladesh defeated India 3-2 in the tiebreaker to lift the title of the 2024 SAFF U-16 Women’s Championship on Sunday.

The match was decided by the tiebreaker as the regulation 90 minutes ended in a 1-1 stalemate.

India took the lead as Ansihka Kumari scored in the 4th minute of the match. Bariam Binta Hanna equalized for Bangladesh in the 71st minute.

Bangladesh lifted the trophy without any defeats. It opened the SAFF U-16 campaign with a 2-0 victory over Nepal. It then defeated India 3-1 and scored six goals past hapless Bhutan without conceding in its final match.

Mariam Binta Hanna, Ghuni Marma, and Sathi Munda scored for Bangladesh, while Saurabhi Ahaknda Priti and Alp Akter failed to score.

Shweta Rani and Anbita Raghuraman scored for India, while the penalties of Alinadevi, Bonfilian Shullai, and Diyarani Linda were saved by the Bangladeshi keeper.

Bangladesh is also the holders of the SAFF Women’s Championship and SAFF U-19 Women’s Championship.
