Avoid non-essential, nighttime travel from Friday to Sunday: NDRRMA

KATHMANDU: The National Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Authority (NDRRMA) has issued a public alert warning of severe weather conditions and heightened risk of natural disasters across the country from Friday to Sunday.

It has also requested people to avoid non-essential long-distance and nighttime travel throughout the alert period.

A special bulletin released by the Department of Hydrology and Meteorology on Monday states that heavy to very heavy rainfall accompanied by thunder, lightning, and strong winds is forecast in several areas of Gandaki and Lumbini provinces. Heavy rainfall is also expected in isolated parts of Koshi, Madhesh, Bagmati, and Sudurpashchim provinces, with moderate rainfall predicted across most other regions of the country during this timeframe.

“The weather system originated from a low-pressure area in the Northern Andaman Sea and nearby regions and is currently intensifying over the central Bay of Bengal as a strong Deep Depression,” the NDRRMA said. “Moving in a west-northwest direction, its influence is expected to bring light to moderate rainfall starting Wednesday across parts of Koshi, Bagmati, and Gandaki provinces.”

Officials have warned of heightened risks of flash floods, landslides, debris flows, and urban or Terai inundation during the period.

Likewise, it has asked federal ministries, provincial governments, local administrations, security forces, and volunteers to keep the public informed and remain in high readiness for response operations.

Likewise, it has instructed district security committees, local bodies, and volunteer teams to issue early warnings and facilitate early relocation to safe shelters for families in high-risk areas. It has also advised people living near flash-flood-prone rivers, rivulets, landslide zones, and riverbanks to maintain extreme caution.
