KATHMANDU: India has appointed Sudhakar Dalela as its ambassador to Nepal.

“Sudhakar Dalela, secretary in the ministry, has been appointed as the next ambassador of India to Nepal,” India’s Ministry of External Affairs said in a statement.

Dalela is expected to assume his new responsibilities shortly, according to the ministry.

India appointed Dalela to the position after Naveen Srivastava completed his tenure as India’s ambassador to Nepal.

Although there had been speculation that India might appoint a political figure as its ambassador to Nepal, as it did in Bangladesh, New Delhi has opted for a career diplomat.

Dalela joined the Indian Foreign Service in 1993 and began his diplomatic career in Israel.

Over the course of his career, he has served at Indian missions in Brasilia, Chicago, Dhaka, Geneva, Thimphu and Washington, DC.

Most recently, he served as India’s ambassador to Bhutan from 2022 to 2025.

Dalela also served as a director at the Prime Minister’s Office in India from 2009 to 2011.
