HUMLA: Vehicular movement along the Karnali Corridor resumed on Thursday.

Small vehicles began operating along the corridor from Thursday afternoon after the Hilsa-Simkot Road Project stepped up efforts to clear the road damaged at different places by the recent incessant rainfall, project chief Bel Bahadur Nepali said.

According to Nepali, the road was cleared to facilitate passengers and vehicles that had been stranded along the route after the rains blocked the road. He said preparations were underway to resume the operation of larger vehicles as well.

“Vehicles travelling to Humla via Surkhet and Nepalgunj can now reach Simkot, the district headquarters of Humla,” Nepali said. “However, the road section from Simkot to Hilsa, the border area with China, has not yet resumed operation. Work to clear that section is also underway.”

Floods and landslides triggered by incessant rains have damaged the Karnali Corridor and several rural roads in the district. Local governments have also mobilized manpower and equipment to reopen the rural roads.

On Wednesday, the District Disaster Management Committee had directed the concerned agencies to immediately reopen roads blocked by the rains.

The reopening of the Karnali Corridor is expected to facilitate the transportation of food, daily essentials and other goods to Humla from other districts. However, transportation across the district is likely to take more time to return to normal until the Simkot-Hilsa section and some rural roads are fully reopened.
